The fund raising machine first pioneered by Howard Dean, then utilized by John Kerry has proven extremely effective for Barack Obama.
Online contributions for Obama began on February 10,2007. This was the day he announced his candidacy and the first time I made a donation. At the end of January, 2008, Obama had 256,000 donations for the month. February ended with 727,000 donations bringing his total to 983,000 for the year.
Late last night, Obama reached 1,983,000 donations for 2008. That means as of now, he has broken the 1,000,000 donation mark for March with nine days to go in the month.
The rate of donations stands at ~45,450 donations per day. His February average donation size was $75. If he maintained that average donation size, he has raised $75,000,000 for the month or $3,400,000 per day. If his average donation size dropped to $50 he has raised over $50,000,000 or $2,272,500 per day.
At the rate donations are coming in, he should have at least 1,400,000 donations for the entire month by the end.
This means Obama is on track to raising somewhere between $70,000,000 and $105,000,000 for the month.
Those are astounding numbers.
Regardless of the number, I believe it's safe to say he will be obliterating the record for the largest amount of money raised in a single month.
